Andy Murray has given us all a reason to celebrate this week after he cemented his place as World Number 1 by beating Novak Djokovic at the ATP Tour Finals at the weekend. It was a stunning victory given that he went into the final looking tired after a long season and two gruelling matches to get there. He secured his place as number 1 by beating his long-term nemesis, Djokovic.
Did any of you see Andy’s interview after he was confirmed as number 1 when Milos Raonic had to withdraw from the semi-final of the Paris Masters a couple of weeks ago, a tournament he went onto win? Click on the image below to see the interview and there are lessons from the best for us all when we consider our own goals.
Andy Murray described his achievement as a whole year’s work that took a lot of hard work and that he hadn’t expected to achieve that goal so soon. This is a wonderful lesson in hard work, patience, perseverance and consistency to achieve our main goal.
Know Where You Want To Be
How many of you have thought about where you want to be in a year’s time? Do you write down your goals and have a plan to make yourself accountable for achieving them? Do you have periods during the year where you feel you lack motivation?
If you answered no to the second question and yes to the third question then perhaps it’s time to follow Andy’s lead and re-think your goals. The time spent thinking more about what, specifically, we want to achieve over the longer term as well as the short term is worth it. It’s also important to physically write down these goals so that we can constantly refer to them from time to time to make sure that we are on track or whether they need updated.
Too often when we set goals, they are often short term ones (up to 3 months) whether it’s getting down to a certain weight, getting fit for a holiday or a particular event and once we’ve achieved them, we can often find ourselves lacking motivation as we haven’t set a new goal. Perhaps we can learn from Andy Murray and set longer term goals that will take us the best part of the year to accomplish and keep us motivated?
In my next post, I will be sharing with you my tips on how to set goals that will keep you focused and motivated especially with 2017 just around the corner….
