About Steve

Hi, I’m Steve, your Personal Trainer and Running Coach

I believe that exercise should be fun, something we look forward to doing and discovering what we can do today that we didn’t believe possible for us yesterday and how it makes us feel.

Many people I speak to tell me they like how much being active helps their mind as well as their body. That’s why I believe that how we look, how much we weigh, how fast we run etc are much less important compared to how we feel.

I want to inspire people to become more active so that they can achieve the things they’ve always wanted to do and feel great about themselves again.

My Story

In 1997, I suffered muscles spasms in my back and was prescribed strong painkillers and signed off work for 4 weeks. I realised then I had to do something about my fitness as I didn’t want to go through life affected by back problems in the same way my Mum did.

So I entered the London Marathon! I had watched it on tv, felt inspired but thought it was for people fitter than me. I felt I needed something big to get me moving and this was perfect. Even better when I got in first time!

Crossing the finish line that day completely changed my life. I felt an enormous sense of achievement that I had never experienced before and came away with the desire to help others achieve something amazing as I had just done. If I can do it, anyone can. I quit my job as a Pizza Chef and trained to become a Personal Trainer.

About Me

Running continues to be a huge part of my life and love my early morning runs to enjoy the views over Perth and set me up for the day.

Away from work, I love a good coffee and enjoy trying the different blends from The Bean Shop for my morning coffee. I love cooking and make my own pizzas every Saturday, usually washed down with a nice cold beer or a glass of red.

I still love challenging myself and discover what I’m capable of. I did my first Ironman 70.3 in 2017 and did it again in 2018. My proudest moment was in 2014 when I ran all 4 races (5km, 10km, Half Marathon, Marathon) at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival as part of a fundraiser in memory of my Dad. This photo was when I crossed the finish line of the marathon.

What My Clients Say

I had extensive surgery around my knee which included my ACL being replaced. After physio, I now needed to strengthen my leg. As well as helping me physically, Steve was very good at working through my mental blocks when I wasn’t sure my knee could take some of the exercises. This allowed me to see that my knee was capable of far more than my mind thought. I am now back training at Karate and preparing for a 100km walk. My knee feels great and my leg is continuing to get stronger. I would not hesitate to recommend Steve

I started working with Steve primarily to lose weight but also to be able to continue playing fives when I turned 50. I had a back problem and so was going to be a challenge. I’m now 59, I’ve lost some weight, have very few issues with my back and most importantly, I’m still playing fives. I’m scoring more goals than I did when I started and feel fitter than many of the guys half my age! Even the good players are paying compliments! Good job!

Steve McLaren

I was struggling with a knee injury that stopped me from running and Steve looked at how I moved then gave me some exercises to practice. What hugely helped was having Steve listen to my feedback and squash my worries. I overthink a lot and having him coach me through and reassure me was perfect. Now I can run without any issues. Thank you!!

Before coming to see Steve, I was feeling at one of my lowest points. I was low in confidence and unhappy with how I looked. I gained a whole new perspective and enjoyed seeing how I could do things I never thought I could. I now believe in myself more and my confidence has grown. I’m now wearing outfits I never thought I’d get into and feel really happy

Thank you for all your running advice! I did not think it could happen when you said I would suddenly take off and start passing people effortlessly and it happened all the time today! Also my back pain was virtually non-existent thanks to the exercises you gave to me
