Facing The Fear And Doing It Anyway
I believe our biggest threat is comfort.
There are lots of things we can get done for us, brought to us and there are many things I'm sure we'd all sign up for by simply taking a magic pill.
If we're not being challenged, we get lazy, we stop learning and we stop growing.
That's why I've signed up for Ido Portal's Online Coaching program.
I've followed Ido's work for more than a decade, watching his videos on YouTube, his clips on Instagram, mesmerised by how well he moves, wishing I could do that. A bit like being a kid again, watching my favourite footballers, wishing I could be as good as them.
I've come to the realisation that I need to do something for myself. Something that will challenge me, that will take me so far out of my comfort zone that I'd need a map to get back, crucially something I'm crap at because if it was easy, I wouldn't be motivated to do it.
That's the whole point. What's the point in signing up for something that isn't going to stretch you?
It's not just about being able to do impressive looking moves, it's about learning, failing many times but being excited about practicing in order to become better, growing, discovering what I can do that I couldn't do before, how it makes me feel and for the person I become from doing this.
Over the years, I've done many things that have scared the shit out of me:
Running my first marathon
Changing career to become a Personal Trainer
Starting my own business
Taking over as race organiser of the Perth 10k
Running all 4 races (5k, 10k, Half Marathon, Marathon) at the 2014 Edinburgh Marathon Festival
Doing my first Ironman 70.3
In each, I knew nothing about what I was about to do but that also made it exciting.
In a way, it gets harder as you get older only because of comfort. I'll be 55 in just over 2 months time and could keep doing the same things over and over, settling for an easy life.
I'm doing this primarily for me but I also want to be able to pass on what I'm learning to other people like me, who want something better, who are fed up of doing the same old things and would love to discover what they're capable of.
Effectively, I'm putting myself in the same position as many of my clients when they start working with me.
